Kawasho Foods USA is recalling one of its Geisha canned shrimp products over concerns of potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a potentially lethal toxin.
The voluntary recall, covering the company's Geisha Medium Shrimp 4-Ounce canned product, was initiated after some of the cans were found to be swelling, leaking, or bursting. According to 27 February announcement from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, there is a possibility the product was underprocessed, leading to spoilage and the development of harmful organisms or pathogens.
The New York City, U.S.A.-based company announced the cans were distributed to retail locations of major retailers including Walmart, Albertsons, Safeway, Associated Food Stores, Stater Bros Markets, in the U.S. states of California, Utah, Arizona, and Colorado.
Botulism is a a rare but serious illness caused by a toxin that attacks the body’s nerves and causes difficulty breathing, muscle paralysis, and even death, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control.
The company has recalled products with UPC label #071140003909, from lot LGC12W12E22; with a best-by date of 12 May, 2026.
"Consumers should not use this product, even if it does not look or smell spoiled," the company warned.
Consumers are eligible for a full refund if they return the recalled products to their place of purchase.
