Kawasho Foods U.S.A. is expanding its recall of its Geisha canned shrimp products over concerns of potential contamination with Clostridium botulinum, a potentially lethal toxin.
Its original recall, issued 27 February, 2023, covered four-ounce cans of Geisha shrimp sold at stores distributed to retail locations of major retailers including Walmart, Albertsons, Safeway, Associated Food Stores, Stater Bros Markets, in the U.S. states of California, Utah, Arizona, and Colorado.
The expanded recall, issued 21 April, covers all lots of the product distributed nationwide, which includes distribution in Alabama, Arkansas, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin.
"Kawasho Foods is taking this step out of an abundance of caution due to a concern that there is a possibility that the product has been under-processed, which could lead to the potential for spoilage organisms or pathogens," it said.
The company has recalled products with UPC label #071140003909 sold from December 2022 through February 2023.
"Consumers should not use this product, even if it does not look or smell spoiled. No illnesses or other adverse consequences have been reported to date in connection with this product," the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said.
