Bergen, Norway-headquartered salmon-farming company Mowi recalled some of its packaged, cold-smoked Atlantic salmon sent to Canada due to the potential presence of dangerous bacteria.
The recall covers 113 grams of cold-smoked, packaged salmon, which were distributed to retailers in the Canadian province of Ontario with Mowi’s brand name attached. The recall is issued for packages sold from 27 March up to 10 April 2024, the Canadian government said in a release.
The product is potentially contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, which may not appear to be spoiled upon first inspection but can cause illness.
“Symptoms in adults can include facial paralysis or loss of facial expression, unreactive or fixed pupils, difficulty swallowing, drooping eyelids, blurred or double vision, difficulty speaking, including slurred speech, and a change in the sound of the voice, including hoarseness,” the Canadian government recall notice said. “Symptoms of foodborne botulism in children can include difficulty swallowing, slurred speech, generalized weakness, and paralysis. In all cases, botulism does not cause a fever. In severe cases of illness, people may die.”
The affected product should be returned to the location of purchase or thrown away immediately, the Canadian government advised.
In February 2023, canned shrimp products from Kawasho Foods USA sold at U.S. Walmart, Safeway, Albertsons and more stores in the Western U.S. were recalled due to the same bacterium.
