The Seafood Nutrition Partnership (SNP), an Arlington, Virginia, U.S.A.-based nonprofit that aims to promote the health and nutritional benefits of seafood, has launched a Summer Seafood Challenge, drawing support from companies up and down the seafood supply chain.

The campaign, which kicked off 20 June and runs through 20 August, asks participants to create or join a team on Give Lively – a free fundraising platform for nonprofits – commit to eating seafood at least twice a week for 60 days, and engage their friends, family, and colleagues to join the initiative and donate. They are also encouraged to share their seafood experiences on social media using the hashtags #SeafoodChallenge, #SummerSeafoodChallenge, and #Seafood2xWk and tagging @Seafood4Health in their posts.

“[The challenge] embodies SNP's mission to increase seafood consumption while advocating for the importance of a balanced diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids for optimal brain health,” SNP said in a press release.

Sysco Category Director for Seafood Tony Downs is one seafood industry executive urging support of the challenge. Downs is currently the top fundraiser in the challenge, having raised over USD 8,000 (EUR 7,334) since its launch, and Team Sysco took home the trophy in the same challenge last year, SNP Communications Manager Corey Bachman told SeafoodSource.

“I encourage my seafood colleagues to join me in this challenge,” Downs said. “Having our industry ‘walk the walk’ and share their experiences and favorite recipes on social media will help support Seafood Nutrition Partnership's nonprofit mission to inspire a healthier America.”

Other company teams include Team Riverence, Team Aquamar, Team Portico, Team H-E-B, and Team Bristol, the latter of which aims to donate USD 100 (EUR 94) for each employee who participates.

“This fun and friendly challenge not only encourages individuals to incorporate more seafood into their diets but also supports our Eating for Brain Health program, providing accessible and affordable seafood recipes to underserved communities,” SNP Founder and President Linda Cornish said.

SNP has expanded this year’s campaign with enhanced components that allow registered dietitians, influencers, and consumers to promote the nutritional benefits of seafood. For example, social media influencers and seafood cookbook authors Valentine Thomas and Jenny Shea-Rawn will join other challenge champions to share recipes and cooking tips for easy meals that consumers can make at home, SNP said.
