SeafoodSource is closely following the plant-based and cell-based seafood alternatives market by compiling a regular round-up of updates from the sector.

- Vienna, Austria-based food company Revo Foods, which specializes in plant-based products, launched Version 2.0 of its Revo Salmon – a plant-based smoked salmon made from pea protein.

With the new launch, the product has been renamed to SMOKEY SLICES, having an orange-red color to replicate the look, taste, and texture of wild salmon. The product also comes in two flavors: smokey style and dill and lemon.

“With this new alternative to wild salmon, we have updated the nutritional value, especially the high content of omega-3 fatty acids which is a clear plus for consumers,” Revo Foods CEO Robin Simsa told SeafoodSource. “We hope that the plant-based seafood sector will keep developing and reach more consumers over time, as this has great potential to reduce some of the negative consequences of current fishing practices.”

In addition to SMOKEY SLICES, which is available in the Revo Online shop and Austria-based supermarkets, Revo Foods launched its octopus analog, THE KRAKEN, in March. The product is made from fungi-protein as an alternative to tentacles, imitating the look and feel of a real octopus.

"Our mission is to create genuine alternatives that not only offer excellent taste and texture but also provide nutritional benefits while taking off the pressure on marine ecosystems,” Revo Foods Creative Manager Nike Farag said. “We are inspired by Mother Nature; we may not yet achieve her perfection, but we are committed to protecting her and treating her right."

- Plant-based seafood company AQUA Cultured Foods, which is headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A., debuted it seafood analogs at Chicago-based restaurant Bambola, marking the first time AQUA Cultured Foods' products have been served at a restaurant, AQUA Cultured Foods Co-Founder Brittany Chibe announced on LinkedIn

The seafood analogs were prepared by Bambola Chef Marcos Campos in a seven-course meal, featuring AQUA Cultured Foods tuna, scallops, and minced shrimp analogs.

“This was a team effort, and I couldn't be prouder to see this come to life. After three years in the making, AQUA is coming to Chicago fine dining,” Chibe said.

AQUA Cultured Foods analogs stay fresh for up to six weeks, it said. The company aims to be in at least 10 restaurants in the Chicago area, Chibe said, according to AXIOS Chicago.

"We put cellulose through a pasteurization step and add a flavor system and a color system so when you see our tuna, it essentially looks just like a tuna fillet," Chibe said about the seafood analog creation process.

Additionally, AQUA Cultured Foods recently announced a partnership with Ginkgo Bioworks to accelerate the development process of its plant-based seafood products.

- Rehovot, Israel-based cultivated meat and seafood company Steakholder Foods will host a conference call discussing its financial results for 2023 on 21 May at 8:30 a.m. EDT.

Steakholder Foods previously released its fiscal year 2023 financial results on 30 April.  The report showed advancements in both the company's technological sector and its market presence.

The company also recently launched its SHMeat and SHFish products, which include 3D-printed beef, chicken, and salmon, in an attempt to expand its analog offerings. Other Steakholder offerings include cell-cultivated eel, shrimp, and whitefish analogs.

- The Plant-Based Seafood Co., headquartered in Gwynn’s Island, Virginia, U.S.A., has announced the re-launch of its The Happy Crabby Sandwich at all PLNT Burger locations across the U.S. states of New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Maryland, and Virginia, as well as Washington D.C., starting 20 May.

“Thanks to the overwhelmingly positive response, the Mind Blown Crab Cake Sandwich returns on all PLNT Burger menus, emphasizing its popularity and relevance as we approach World Ocean Month in June,” the company said in a release.

The product was launched last year as a limited-time offer in the Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia area.

"We are thrilled to once again join forces with PLNT Burger to announce the return of the irresistible Happy Crabby Sandwich," The Plant-Based Seafood Co. CEO Monica Talbert said. "This launch comes as we gear up for the summer season and in tribute to World Ocean Month, underscoring our shared dedication to sustainability and culinary innovation.”

The Plant-Based Seafood Co. announced its partnership with PLNT Burger in June 2023, when they initially debuted the New Bay Crab Cake Sandwich.
