Charlotte Langley, co-founder of Toronto, Canada-based Scout Canning, has left the canned seafood company she helped co-found to start up Langley Foods, a consumer foods branding company.

Langley Foods is expanding beyond the seafood sector to the overall consumer packaged goods (CPG) and beverage industries but aims to maintain connections with the seafood industry by collaborating with fisheries, canneries, and certification bodies to create premium, sustainably sourced products.

“We believe in creating a diverse portfolio that reflects our commitment to quality, sustainability, and culinary innovation. Our connections within the seafood industry serve as a foundation for broader collaborations and initiatives across the entire food and beverage landscape," Langley told SeafoodSource.

The inspiration behind the new consumer branding company came from Langley's desire to empower startups in the food and beverage industries that are committed to crafting products benefiting the planet and its people.

“I saw an opportunity to use my expertise not only to promote local, sustainable food sourcing but also to support and elevate other like-minded entrepreneurs who share our values of ethical sourcing and environmental stewardship,” she said.

As one of the founders of Scout Canning, Langley’s role involved spearheading community engagement and strategic partnerships to support the growing trend of canned seafood online – skills that she believes are essential in her new role as a branding consultant.

For example, Scout Canning took advantage of the tinned seafood trend that grew in popularity on social media during the Covid-19 pandemic, turning it into a marketing opportunity.

“While I believed in the potential of the TikTok canned seafood movement, the exponential growth of the trend exceeded my expectations,” Langley told SeafoodSource.  “Through Scout Canning, I continued to champion this movement, inspiring others to embrace canned seafood as a delicious and sustainable option,” she said.

Through such efforts as monitoring trends, as well as prioritizing sustainability and nutrition, Langley hopes to help businesses in the Canadian food and beverage industries thrive in their branding campagins with her new venture.
