The news continues to be bleak for salmon fishermen on Alaska’s largest river.??
The Yukon River king salmon run is turning out to be as bad — and possibly even worse — than fisheries biologists were expecting.??
“At this point, with the data we have, the run is not looking good,” Yukon area management biologist Steve Hayes with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game said Tuesday during the Yukon River Drainage Fisheries Association’s weekly teleconference.??
Biologists were predicting a run size between 109,000 and 146,000 kings. The larger number barely would satisfy hungry subsistence fishermen and still deliver a minimum number of fish to the spawning grounds in Alaska and Canada.??
So far, Hayes said, the chinook run is looking like it will come in at the lower end of the preseason projection.
