Whole Foods Market has issued a recall of four-ounce Whole Catch Wild Alaskan Sockeye Salmon due to concerns it may contain listeria monocytogenes.
The products, according a release from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are sold in black-and-gold flat, rectangular vacuum-sealed packages with a lot code of 7425A2298B, and a UPC code of 0 99482 40880 0.
The product, which contains cold smoked and sliced salmon, was sold in stores in Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Kansas, Maine, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, Rhode Island and Utah.
The recall came after a sample product tested positive for the organism. So far, no illnesses have been reported, but it can cause serious, and sometimes fatal infections in young children, the elderly, and people with compromised immune systems. It can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
The disease can cause high fever, severe headaches, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. Whole Foods encouraged anyone who has bought the affected product to throw it away immediately, and seek a full refund at the store.
