As more American consumers adjust their shopping preference to reflect their heightened regard for transparency, retail giant Walmart is upping its premium frozen and organic product offerings by introducing pre-portioned and seasoned Norwegian salmon fillets under The Salmon Man Salmon Portions brand.
Walmart will stock the new product in 485 stores located in the U.S. Midwest – specifically Ohio, Michigan and Indiana – where there is a large Scandinavian population and, thus, a healthy “appetite for authentic Scandinavian salmon,” according to Norwegian Seafood Council. The flash-frozen Salmon Man Salmon Portions feature Norwegian fillets sourced from Stranda, Norway-based Platina Seafood, and come in three unique flavors: Original, Salmon with Garlic & Herb Crust and Salmon with Cajun Crust.
Platina, which has a sales office based in Miami, Florida, is dedicated to the promotion and production of antibiotic-free farmed salmon from Norway’s sustainable ocean farms, adhering to Walmart’s sourcing strategy.
“When it comes to salmon, origin can differentiate a good product from a great product,” the Norwegian Seafood Council said in a press release. “Norway has earned an international reputation for purveying the finest, freshest seafood and is world-renowned for its ocean-farmed salmon. Responsibly raised in the cold, clear waters of Norway, the salmon are given the time, space and opportunity to fully mature and develop their delicate, easily distinguishable flavor. By combining hard-earned experience and advanced technology, Norway is able to monitor and promote healthy fish growth and food safety at every step.”
Salmon is known for its high omega-3 fatty acids content, and for being a good source of vitamins and essential minerals, as recommended by the USDA’s latest Dietary Guidelines. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) also recommends salmon consumption for pregnant women and young children.
