In 2017, a year of change in the seafood industry saw new players come to the fore, medium-sized companies solidify their presences as players in seafood, and longtime powerhouses face potentially existential threats.
Produced since 1999, the Top 25 North American Seafood Suppliers list was originally published in SeaFood Business magazine. Now, we are happy to add to the legacy with this updated version of the list, which takes into account sales figures from 2016.
This free, online version of the list offers an overview of the top players in the industry in North America. The complete rankings - including a detailed dossier of each top firm and a comprehensive analysis of this year's list - are available in the 2017 Top 25 North American Seafood Suppliers E-Book.
Editor's note about this year's list: The Top 25 North American Seafood Suppliers list is not a comprehensive list of North America’s top companies. Participation is purely voluntary, except for the relatively few seafood companies that are traded publicly, in which case we review annual shareholder reports and contact the company for more information if it is large enough to be in consideration for inclusion on the list.
However, the majority of seafood firms are privately owned and therefore under no obligation to report their revenue. In addition, according to our long-standing policy, for any previously ranked company that does not report their sales in any given year, we carry their sales figure over to the next year, but for one year only.
Ultimately, while not exhaustive, this year's list still offers a fascinating snapshot of the North American seafood industry. Containing suppliers, wholesalers and distributors – companies with vastly different business models – the list reveals the diversity and vibrancy of the seafood industry in North America.
Thanks to all the companies that elected to participate this year. For questions about the rankings or to be considered for inclusion next year, contact me at [email protected].
