SeafoodSource is closely following the plant-based and cell-based seafood alternatives market by compiling a weekly round-up of the sector updates.

- Thai Union’s John West canned fish brand has launched a plant-based tuna analog. The new product is available for retail in the Netherlands. The company said it created the product to meet the increasing demand for plant-based seafood and fish-free alternatives in the Netherlands and globally.

“The introduction of fish-free options alongside our traditional tuna products gives consumers more choice and provides an alternative, relevant source of protein. There is a huge opportunity to connect with consumers of all ages who pursue a flexitarian lifestyle,” John West Holland Country Manager Arno Snoey said in a press release.

- The Japan Times reported the country's first plant-based seafood manufacturer, Nippon Ham, has entered the country’s alternative market. Its first two developments, a whitefish analog and a popcorn shrimp analog, will be distributed to businesses beginning 1 April, 2023.

“When it comes to food alternatives, there’s a fear that they wouldn’t taste as good as the real deal – this psychological resistance exists within consumers, we believe. We’re trying to change that,” Nippon Ham Marketing and Promotion Manager Jun Ichikawa said.

- Singapore-based Ha Li Fa launched its first plant-based brand Eat, Plant, Love in October and announced its expansion in February. According to Food Navigator Asia, Ha Li Fa will be expanding from Singapore and Malaysia, to Cambodia, Brunei, and Saudi Arabia.

- Gwynn’s Island, Virginia, U.S.A.-based Mind Blown by The Plant Based Seafood Co. (Mind Blown) announced a partnership with the Coral Restoration Foundation. Beginning on 1 March, one percent of all profits from all Mind Blown products will benefit the foundation, the company said in a press release.
