There has been a strong year-on-year rise in shrimp prices thus far in 2016 in China, with data from wholesale markets published by the country’s Agriculture Ministry showing higher prices in the four main shrimp regions in the first quarter of the year.
The average price for 40 head of shrimp in the Pearl River Delta (which includes Guangzhou and Shenzhen) is hitting CNY 44 (USD 6.60, EUR 6.02) per 500 grams, up from a top rate of CNY 39 (USD 5.85, EUR 5.34) in the same period last year. In Zhejiang, each 40-head batch of shrimp averaged a price of CNY 42 (USD 6.30, EUR 5.75), while 50-head batches averaged CNY 38 (USD 5.70, EUR 5.20) per 500 grams.
The lowest priced region for shrimp continues to be the island province of Hainan, where prices rose to an average CNY 32 (USD 4.80, EUR 4.38) per 500 grams in the first three months of the year, up from an average CNY 29 (USD 4.35, EUR 3.97) per 500 grams in the same period last year.
