San Mateo, California, U.S.A.-based plant-based seafood analog start-up Impact Food has received USD 500,000 (EUR 490,000) from strategic angel and venture capital funding to be used toward employment and research and development in preparation of a pre-seed funding round.
Impact Food produces a plant-based tuna analog product to be used as an alternative for poke, sushi, and ceviche meals. It is working to create additional plant-based mollusk and crustacean analog products.
New Delhi, India-based Ahisma Foundation contributed USD 150,000 (EUR 147,000) toward the funding round.
“Ahimsa Foundation is excited to invest in Impact Food, as its work in creating a solution to this challenge is exemplary," Ahisma Foundation President Shaleen Shah said. "Great taste, texture, and nutrition for a plant-based fish alternative.”

The company lists its mission as striving to create “delicious plant-based seafood that provides nutrition without extinction," referencing fishing pressure on the Pacific bluefin tuna population.
"There will be an upcoming demand for alternatives," it said in a written message to its investors. "Together, we can use food as a catalyst for change to cultivate a better future for the planet, people, and animals, starting by bringing life back to our oceans and allowing them to recover from decades of ecological damage."
