Performance Food Group, one of the largest foodservice distributors in the United States, is launching distribution of Bay Winds Fair Trade Certified Norwegian Salmon.
Through a partnership with Beaver Street Fisheries, PFG has exclusive rights to distribute the products, which is the only farmed salmon in the world that is Fair Trade certified. It is supplied by Indre Kvaroy, Norway-based Kvaroy Arctic.
A program of Fair Trade USA, Fair Trade is the only certification program that covers fundamental human rights, workplace safety, and environmental stewardship while also providing a direct economic benefit to producers and their families, PFG said. Kvaroy has helped build schools, introduced aquaculture education programs, and created scholarships funds to promote farm sustainability, animal welfare, and environmental protection.
Kvarøy Arctic became the first company to receive Fair Trade USA certification for farmed finfish and farmed salmon in March 2021. It is the first to achieve the standard for farmed finfish but is not the first seafood company with that distinction from Fair Trade USA. There are several other seafood products that carry the seal – including Anova’s Natural Blue tuna, along with products from Phillips Foods, Northern Wind, Bristol Seafood, and other suppliers.
PFG is selling the Norwegian salmon portions in four-ounce, six-ounce, and eight-ounce skin-on and skinless portions.
The Bay Winds Fair Trade-Certified Norwegian Salmon Portions are a lean source of protein “with a firm, meaty texture, and a mild flavor that that is delicious on its own but can also be perfectly complemented by a vast array of sauces, herbs, spices, and coatings, if desired,” PFG said on its website.
