Norwegian salmon prices ending 2023 near where they started

The average price of a kilogram of Atlantic salmon farmed in Norway reached NOK 84.14 (USD 8.15, EUR 7.44) in week 50 of 2023, very close to where the price was a year prior.

Between weeks 50 and 52 of 2022, the aver per-kilo price of farmed Norwegian salmon was stretched between NOK 78.00 (USD 7.56, EUR 6.90) and NOK 86.00 (USD 8.33, EUR 7.60).

This week's price increased over last week by NOK 0.32 (USD 0.03, EUR 0.02), or 0.38 percent, according to The Nasdaq Salmon Index. The index, which provides weekly sales updates and a weighted average price for fresh, head-on gutted Atlantic superior salmon from Norway, found the average per-kilogram price of salmon has increased NOK 7.65 (USD 0.74, EUR 0.68) over the past four weeks, and is up 10.01 percent, or NOK 10.17 (USD 0.99, EUR 0.90) over the past 12 weeks.

According to the Oslo Børs Fish Pool Price Status, Norway exported 24,551 metric tons (MT) of salmon in week 50 of 2023, up from 24,342 MT exported in the corresponding week of 2022, and up from the 22,243 MT exported in week 49 of 2023.

The Norwegian Salmon Council's weekly report on Norwegian seafood exports indicated the country exported 24,584 MT of salmon and trout. The largest volume of salmon was exported to the E.U., with 18,322 MT.

In Europe, Poland received 3,709 MT of Norwegian salmon, down from last week’s 3,777 MT; France imported 2,783 MT, up from 2,714 MT; Denmark imported 2,331 MT, up from 1,441 MT; the Netherlands imported 2,004 MT, down from 2,709 MT; the United Kingdom imported 1,885 MT, up from last week’s 1,844 MT; Spain imported 1,796 MT, up from 1,686 MT; and Italy imported 1,655 MT, up from 1,408 MT.

China received 795 MT, up from last week’s 788 MT, and the U.S. imported 450 MT, up from last week’s 437 MT.

One- to 2-kilogram salmon accounted for 0.72 percent of total sales, with an average price of NOK 71.70 (USD 6.91, EUR 6.30), an increase of NOK 1.83 (USD 0.18, EUR 0.16) over last week, Nasdaq reported. Two-to-3-kilogram salmon accounted for 10.29 percent of total sales, and sold for an average of NOK 75.25 (USD 7.30, EUR 6.65), down NOK 2.10 (USD 0.20, EUR 0.19).

Salmon in the 3- to 4-kilogram range comprised 27.09 percent of all fish sold and had a per-kilogram average price of NOK 82.93 (USD 8.05, EUR 7.33), an increase of NOK 0.28 (USD 0.03, EUR 0.02). The 4-to-5-kilogram category, comprising 32.14 percent of total sales, saw its average price increase by NOK 1.05 (USD 0.10, EUR 0.08), to NOK 84.79 (USD 8.23, EUR 7.50).

Norwegian salmon between 5 and 6 kilograms, representing 19.81 percent of total sales, increased to an average per-kilogram price of NOK 86.31 (USD 8.37, EUR 7.63), up NOK 0.59 (USD 0.06, EUR 0.05), while 6- to 7-kilogram salmon, which accounted for 7.07 percent of the total distribution, sold for an average of NOK 88.74 (USD 8.08, EUR 7.49), a decline of NOK 0.88 (USD 0.08, EUR 0.07). The price of salmon weighing between 7 and 8 kilograms increased to NOK 92.33 (USD 8.96, EUR 8.17), and made up 2.21 percent of the total distribution. Salmon in the 8- to 9-kilogram range declined NOK 0.88 (USD 0.08, EUR 0.07)  to NOK 100.14 (USD 9.71, EUR 8.86). 

Fish Pool reported January futures pricing dropped to NOK 104.30 (USD 10.14, EUR 9.24) per kilogram from last week’s 104.90 (USD 9.71, EUR 8.93). February's futures also dropped to NOK 108.60 (USD 10.55, EUR 9.62) from last week’s NOK 108.60 (USD 9.93, EUR 9.20), and March's futures increased to NOK 111.20 (USD 10.80, EUR 9.84) from 110.20 (USD 10.08, EUR 9.33).

Futures pricing for Q1 2024 was reported at NOK 108.00 from last week’s NOK 107.90, while Q2 2024 futures pricing hit NOK 113.80.
