Norwegian salmon prices up 41 percent over the past 12 weeks

The average per-kilogram price of Norwegian salmon reached NOK 137.41 (USD 12.48, EUR 11.73) in week 15 of 2024, up from 1.57 percent from the previous week’s 135.28 (USD 12.46, EUR 11.61).

According to the Nasdaq Salmon Index, a database that provides weekly sales updates and a weighted average price for fresh, head-on gutted Atlantic superior salmon from Norway, average prices have increased 27.37 percent over the past four weeks and nearly 41 percent over the past 12 weeks.

Salmon between 1 and 2 kilograms accounted for 0.7 percent of total sales during the 15th week of 2024 and reached an average price of NOK 104.82 (USD 9.52, EUR 8.94), up from week 14’s 103.37 (USD 9.54, EUR 8.88). Salmon between 2 and 3 kilograms comprised 8.63 percent of total sales and sold for an average of NOK 120.96 (USD 10.98, EUR 10.32) up from last week’s NOK 119.60 (USD 11.04, EUR 10.28). Salmon in the 3- to 4-kilogram range comprised 23.29 percent of total fish sold and had a per-kilo average price of NOK 136.09 (USD 12.36, EUR 11.61), up from last week’s NOK 132.37 (USD 12.22, EUR 11.38).

The 4- to-5-kilogram category, comprising 26.04 percent of total sales during week 15, had its average week-over-week per-kilo price increase by NOK 3.43 (USD 0.31, EUR 0.29), reaching NOK 139.29 (USD,EUR), up from last week’s 136.22 (USD 12.58, EUR 11.70). Norwegian salmon between 5 and 6 kilograms made up 22.25 percent of sales, and prices in the category increased NOK 2.74 (USD 0.25, EUR 0.23) week over week to reach NOK 141.59 (USD 12.83, EUR 12.06), up from last week’s 138.84 (USD 12.82, EUR 11.93). 

Salmon in the 6- to 7-kilogram category made up 12.94 percent of total sales and sold for an average of NOK 139.94 (USD 12.92, EUR 12.02), up from the previous week’s NOK 133.38 (USD 12.44, EUR 11.48). Salmon weighing between 7 and 8 kilograms, which accounted for 5.57 percent of total distribution, reached an average per-kilo price of NOK 136.42 (USD12.37, EUR 11.62), down from last week’s NOK 137.98 (USD 12.73, EUR 11.85). Salmon in the 8- to 9-kilogram range comprised 1.15 percent of sales and decreased in price week over by NOK 2.77 (USD 0.25, EUR 0.24), to reach NOK 134.24 (USD 12.15, EUR 11.42) from last week’s NOK 137.01 (USD 12.65, EUR 11.77).

Fish Pool also predicted the average futures pricing of Norwegian salmon and slated April's futures pricing to reach an estimated NOK 130 (USD 11.30, EUR 11.09), up from last week’s NOK 124 (USD 11.44, EUR 10.65). May’s prices are predicted to increase to NOK 117 (USD 10.65, EUR 9.98), up from last week’s NOK 114.95 (USD 10.61, EUR 9.87). June’s predicted futures pricing remains the same as reported in week 14 at NOK 110.90 (USD 9.52, EUR 8.79).

Q2 2024 futures pricing predictions increased to NOK 119.30 (USD 10.85, EUR 10.17) from last week’s NOK 117.30 (USD 10.83, EUR 10.08), and Q3 2024 has also increased slightly to NOK 88.27 (USD 8.03, EUR 7.52), from last week’s NOK 87.37 (USD 8.07, EUR 7.51). Q4 2024 futures pricing now stands at a predicted NOK 89.73 (USD 8.16, EUR 7.56), up from the previous NOK 87.37 (USD 8.07, EUR 7.51).

The Norwegian Salmon Council's weekly report on Norwegian seafood exports showed the country exported 13,058 metric tons (MT) of salmon in the 15th week of 2024, up from the prior week's 11,687 MT but down from the 15,325 MT exported in week 15 of 2023.  

European nations held the top spot as the primary market for Norwegian salmon, purchasing 10,261 MT of the product, which is higher than week 14's 8,505 MT.

Denmark imported 2,366 MT which is higher than the 1,880 MT from last week; Poland purchased 2,065 MT, an increase from 1,334 MT the prior week; France imported 1,234 MT, up from the 1,051 MT last week; Spain imported 1,147 MT, up from the 1,134 MT sent in week 14; the Netherlands imported 1,005 MT, up from the 818 MT imported last week; Italy imported 984 MT, up from last week’s 920 MT; and the U.K. imported 538 MT, down from last week’s 546 MT.

China received 462 MT, down from last week’s 609 MT of Norwegian salmon, and the U.S. imported 51 MT which is higher than the 35 MT from last week.
