The average price of a kilogram of Atlantic salmon farmed in Norway is down NOK 1.44 (USD 0.13, EUR 0.12) over the past week, according to The Nasdaq Salmon Index.
In week 46 of 2023, Norway exported 24,833 metric tons (MT) of salmon, up from 22,962 MT exported in the corresponding week of 2022, and up from the 23,852 MT exported in week 45 of 2023, the Oslo Børs Fish Pool Price Status reported.
The index, which provides weekly sales updates and a weighted average price for fresh, head-on gutted Atlantic superior salmon from Norway, found the average per-kilogram price of salmon has declined NOK 7.70 (USD 0.71, EUR 0.66) over the past four weeks, but is up NOK 5.30 (USD 0.49, EUR 0.45) over the past 12 weeks.
The Norwegian Salmon Council's weekly report on Norwegian seafood exports, meanwhile, indicated that the country exported 23,834 MT of salmon. The largest volume of salmon was exported to the E.U., with 19,337 MT – more than the 23,175 MT in the same week of 2022.
In Europe, Poland received 5,121 MT of Norwegian salmon, down from last week’s 5,227 MT; France imported 2,452 MT, up from 2,160 MT; Denmark imported 2,410 MT, up from 1,899 MT; the Netherlands imported 2,402 MT, down from 5,227 MT; Spain imported 1,795 MT, up from 1,698 MT; the United Kingdom imported 1,393 MT, up from last week’s 1,341 MT, and Italy imported 1,393 MT, up from 1,371 MT.
China received 859 MT, up from last week’s 764 MT, and the U.S. imported 539 MT, up from last week’s 535 MT.
One- to 2-kilogram salmon accounted for 0.61 percent of total sales, with an average price of NOK 66.94 (USD 6.20, EUR 5.70), an increase of NOK 0.02 (USD 0.01, EUR 0.01) over last week, Fish Pool reported. Two-to-3-kilogram salmon accounted for 12.41 percent of total sales, and sold for an average of NOK 72.26 (USD 6.69, EUR 6.16), down NOK 3.49 (USD 0.32, EUR 0.30).
Salmon in the 3- to 4-kilogram range made up 26.37 percent of all fish sold, and had a per-kilogram average price of NOK 76.12 (USD 7.05, EUR 6.49), a decrease of NOK 1.25 (USD 0.12, EUR 0.11). The 4-to-5-kilogram category, comprising 31.45 percent of total sales, saw its average price decline slightly by NOK 1.14 (USD 0.11, EUR 0.01) from last week.
Salmon between 5 and 6 kilograms, representing 20.43 percent of total sales, declined to an average per-kilogram price of NOK 77.65 (USD 7.19, EUR 6.62), down NOK 0.86 (USD 0.01, EUR 0.01), while 6- to 7-kilogram salmon, which accounted for 6.37 percent of the total distribution, sold for an average of NOK 80.17 (USD 7.34, EUR 6.76) – an increase of NOK 1.82 (USD 0.17, EUR 0.16). The price of salmon weighing between 7 and 8 kilograms increased to NOK 80.27 (USD 7.43, EUR 6.83), and made up 6.37 percent of the total distribution.
Fish Pool reported November's futures pricing remained flat at NOK 77.75 (USD 7.21, EUR 6.63) from last week’s same price. December's future pricing is also flat and slightly increased to NOK 85.25 (USD 7.62, EUR 7.01) from last week’s NOK 85.00 (USD 7.87, EUR 7.24)
