Hilton Food Group-owned Foppen Seafood has issued a recall for one lot number of toast slices sold in Kroger grocery stores.

The recall is for Smoked Norwegian Salmon Slices – toast-sized in 8.1-ounce packages, identified by lot number 412 and sold in Kroger and Payless Supermarkets across 15 U.S. states.

“This action is being taken due to the contamination with Listeria monocytogenes,” the company said in a 25 June press release.

The Harderwijk, Netherlands-based smoked salmon brand said the listeria was found during routine testing. The affected lot was distributed to Kroger and Payless Supermarkets stores in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and West Virginia.

“At Foppen Seafood, we operate to the highest standards of health, safety, and quality control. We have taken immediate steps to address this isolated incident, and we are collaborating closely with Kroger and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to ensure a swift resolution,” Foppen said in a press release.

Symptoms of listeria include fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea and may last from days to several weeks. Foppen said any consumers who have consumed the affected product and are feeling symptoms should seek medical attention, according to Foppen.

“Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including older people, pregnant women, and their unborn babies babies less than 1 month old and people with weakened immune systems,” Foppen said. “Consumers should discard product or return for a refund. Customers who have purchased the affected Smoked Norwegian Salmon Slices with lot number 412 are advised not to consume the product. They should return it to the place of purchase for a full refund or replacement. For any questions or concerns, consumers may contact Foppen Seafood at 844-646-0928 or email [email protected].”

Huntingdon, United Kingdom-based multi-protein food business Hilton Food Group acquired the Dutch Seafood Company, the parent company of Foppen, in 2022.

Foppen has gone through other recalls in the past, including in 2012, when a salmonella outbreak that sickened nearly 1,000 people forced a recall of the product sold in Costco stores across the U.S.

Foppen has introduced a wider range of smoked salmon products in the U.S. in recent years, including flavored and pre-sliced products, such as one involved in the Kroger recall.
