German salmon plant becomes first in country to achieve GSA processing standard

The Global Seafood Alliance announced that Vega Salmon has become the first seafood processing plant in Germany to achieve its Seafood Processing Standard (SPS).

Vega Salmon is based in Kolding, Denmark, and its processing plant is located across the border in Handewitt, Germany. The Atlantic salmon the company processes is farmed by Norwegian partners, and it is used in products for Vega Salmon brands including Vega Basic, New Nordic, and Purity.

“We are very pleased to be part of the Global Seafood Alliance, in connection with our successful Best Aquaculture Practices audit and performance. We want to be BAP-certified to give our customers additional proof of our already comprehensive food-safety programs," Vega Salmon CEO Jakob Graasbøll Enemark said. "The BAP certificate is of great relevance for Vega Salmon and especially our American and Pacific customers, where the program is strongly anchored and well known."

Vega Salmon exports products internationally to more than 30 countries, with a focus on "food safety, great taste, and quality," GSA said.

GSA said that there are now more than 3,100 BAP-certified international processing plants, farms, hatcheries, and feed mills. Of those, 27 are in the United Kingdom, Spain, Norway, Iceland, the Faroe Islands – and now Germany.

“We have high hopes for the value that the Best Aquaculture Practices program will bring to Vega Salmon’s business and the consumers recognition of our food-safety system,”  Vega Salmon Chief Quality Officer Jacob Tidemand said.
