Charoen Pokphand Foods said it is on target to achieving its 2020 sustainability goals, according to a release sent 24 May.
The company announced that it has made progress in areas of animal welfare, environmental footprint reduction, and packaging management. While much of the animal welfare efforts have been focused on the company’s chicken and pork production, the company has also worked at new packaging for aquaculture products to reduce its environmental impact.
Those improvements include reducing single-use plastic bag consumption by switching to different transfer methods. For shrimp larvae, instead of plastic bags, the company is using a “Q-Pass Tank” as transport.
“It is expected that this initiative will help reduce 5 million pieces of plastic waste a year,” CP Foods said.
The company made pledge to reduce packaging in 2018 to reduce the amount of plastic in its packaging, aiming for 100 percent reusable, recyclable, or compostable packaging by 2025. It has also engaged in the “Rak Ni-Ves, Pasak Watershed, Khao Phraya Doen Tong” reforestation project, which used a variety of techniques to encourage reforestation on 955 hectares.
