SeafoodSource is closely following the plant-based and cell-based seafood alternatives market by compiling a regular round-up of updates from the sector.
- Berlin, Germany-based seafood analog startup BettaF!sh announced on 19 April it is now selling its Tu-nah spread across Europe. The plant-based tuna spread is available in more than 280 retail locations.
- Toronto, Canada-based plant-based seafood start-up Seed to Surf announced it is “reimagining the seafood experience” with its tinned whole vegetables as a seafood analog, Food Business News reported. The brand uses vegetables such as enoki mushrooms and celery root to replicate seafood, such as snow crab.
“Initially we were focused on the Canadian market and on big-box grocers and retailers,” Seed to Surf Co-Founder Alexandra. Bergquist said. “We’ve learned where the demand is and where our product best fits in, which is with the specialty grocers, vegan shops, wine bars and bodegas, primarily in the U.S. marketplace. Faire Wholesale has been a key partner in distributing our products in the United States. Our best wholesale partnerships have been with small-scale retailers like Rainbow Tomatoes Garden, the shop with the largest selection of tinned fish in the world, and Besties Vegan Paradise, the ultimate Los Angeles, California-based vegan grocer, to name a few. Specialty grocery is where it’s at, and it definitely helps that tinned fish is having a moment right now.”
- On 20 April, 2023 Rehovot, Israel-based Steakholder Foods announced Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the company to take a closer look at its cultivated seafood and 3D bio-printing processes.
"Today, we ate fish that was produced without fish and meat that was produced without cattle. This is a global revolution. Israel is a global leader in the field of alternative protein, and we will see to it that we continue to lead," Netanyahu said in a press release.
