Brooklyn, New York, U.S.A.-based Akua launched a kelp-based crab cake analog on 20 July as a part of its “sustainable sea greens" category.
The company focuses on creating plant-based foods filled with protein and vitamins. Its new Krab Cakes took four months of development to launch into production, and were created through a collaboration with certified master chef Michael Robbins.
“The Krab Cake is made from ocean-farmed kelp, a zero-input crop that requires no fresh water, no fertilizer, no feed, and no arid land to grow," Akua said in a press release. "Known as a powerhouse of nutritional benefits, kelp is a sea veggie loaded with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fiber, and protein. The kelp in Akua’s Krab Cake is rich with vitamins A, B6, K, as well as zinc, calcium, folate, potassium, and iron. Kelp also filters carbon and nitrogen from the water and creates new jobs for coastal communities.”
Akua expects to launch the Krab Cakes into retail stores in fall 2022 and are available for purchase on its website.
