American seafood company Acme Smoked Fish Corp. is voluntarily recalling one of its products out of concerns it may be contaminated with Listeria.
The Brooklyn, N.Y. company is recalling 564 pounds of its imported four-ounce vacuum packs of Smoked Nova Salmon. The products have a lot code of L.05122014 and were distributed to Giant Food of Landover, Md., which operates supermarkets in Virginia, Delaware, Maryland and the District of Columbia.
Routine testing by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in one package of the product. The organism is known to cause serious and potentially fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and other people with weakened immune systems. No illnesses have been reported to date from contaminated Acme products.
The company is urging customers who bought the product to discard it or return it to the store. Consumers with questions may contact Acme’s quality assurance department at 718-383-8585.
